Some things give off their own light.

Candle flame photo Look around you. You see lots of things around you. Some things give off their own light, such as a star or the sun. The term luminous is used to describe things that give off their own light. Other things do not have light of their own, such as a tree, the moon, or a ball. These objects can be seen because they have light shining on them. They are called illuminated objects.

The amount of light given off by a luminous object is called luminous intensity. It is measured in a unit called a candela (or candle). Illumination is the amount of light energy that falls on any specified area. The units of illumination are either lux (SI unit) or foot-candles. Like sound, light spreads out in waves from its source. The farther an object is from the source of the light, the larger is the area over which the light will spread.
