An important Indian instrument which has been made famous in recent years by the Indian musician Ravi Shankar is the sitar.

A sitar has seven strings that are strummed or plucked by the fingers, and many resonating strings that are only occasionally stroked. Sitars are made with a gourd at the bottom, and sometimes they have a second gourd which is hollow, at the end of the neck. Some instruments used in Indian music are not originally from India, but come from the West. Many great pieces have been composed combining western and eastern instruments and styles of music.
