Raga Voice
Listen to the following traditional Raga song. Are there any examples of western music where people use their voices but do not use actual words?
Only recently have solo instruments come into use. Usually the rhythm instrument used is the tablas (a set of two drums) of different sizes. An instrument with five strings called the tamboura usually provides the vibrational background. Its strings are tuned to the raga, like the sitar and the tablas.
The voice plays a large part in Indian music. Indian singing is very different from Western singing. The words may have little importance, and occasionally are just nonsense syllables.
The North and the South of India have their own unique styles of music. Some of the ragas are the same, but the music sounds quite different.
