Archimedes, a Greek mathematician, received the challenge from his king. You see the king wanted Archimedes to find out if the crown was made of solid gold. After pondering the situation, suddenly a thought emerged.

What he discovered was the weight of the water displaced must equal the weight of the floating object. Now Archimedes figured he could use this to find out what was in the king's crown. He was so excited that he'd shouted, eureka, and the principle of buoyancy was born. Science, what a concept.

Mark Twain. The cry of Twain, meant safe passage for steamboat captains, like Samuel Clemens. They navigated their large vessels carrying many tons of cargo to port cities like St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans. These steamboats no longer dependent on the wind or current to keep them going, but they did rely on Archimedes' principle of buoyancy to keep them afloat.
