Although scientific inquiry spread into the Mediterranean following Greek discoveries, a bleak period ensued during the fifth century, after the fall of the Roman Empire.

Brillenapostel (1403) by Conrad von Soest Although scientific inquiry spread into the Mediterranean following Greek discoveries, a bleak period ensued during the fifth century, after the fall of the Roman Empire. The Dark Ages descended on Europe when barbarians rendered almost total destruction as they swept through. The primary reason we call it the Dark Ages is that we have very little recorded historical evidence of the period. It is theorized that this period of history was triggered by a huge natural catastrophe. This changed the focus of the people from philosophizing to surviving, and there were no advancements in science in Europe for several hundred years.

Science was not dead, however. During the European Dark Ages, civilization was flourishing in China, Arabia, and India. Major advancements in technology, mathematics, medicine, and astronomy were being achieved there. Finally in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the preservation of Greek science by the Muslim world, combined with contributions from the East, allowed a science revival in Europe, starting in Spain and spreading throughout Europe. Some of the discoveries at that time were in optics, as the first spectacles and magnifying glasses were made in the 1200’s. Scientific investigation continued to spread , and universities began to spring up.
