Some light waves are invisible to us.

EM spectrum The visible spectrum is only a small part of a larger spectrum of light waves that exist in the world. This large spectrum is called the electromagnetic spectrum. The electromagnetic spectrum includes many wavelengths that we cannot see, such as x-rays, radio waves, and gamma rays, as well as all the light rays that we can see.

Light with wavelengths longer than red wavelengths are invisible to our eyes. These longer wavelengths are called infrared waves. The prefix infra- means below, so infrared waves are below red on the electromagnetic spectrum. Light with waves shorter than violet are also invisible and are called ultraviolet waves, the prefix ultra- meaning above. The prefix ultra means above, so ultraviolet waves are above violet on the electromagnetic spectrum.
