Electrical energy and chemical energy are two additional forms of energy.

Electrical energy is the energy of moving electrons. An electric current is an example of moving electrons. When you turn on a light switch or start any type of electric appliance, you are using moving electrons as an energy source. A natural example of electrical energy is lightning.

Chemical energy is the energy stored in chemical bonds. The atoms that make up compounds are held together by forces called bonds or chemical bonds. When these bonds are broken, there is a release of energy. For example when you turn on a flashlight you are using the chemical energy that is stored in the battery of the flashlight.

Chemical energy is used by your body when you eat food. The chemical bonds in the food that you eat release energy. This energy is used by your body for body functions and processes. When you burn natural gas, wood, coal, or fuel oil, you also use the chemical energy that is released to warmth (thermal energy) into your home. Huge electrical power plants use the chemical energy stored in coal and natural gas to produce electrical energy for many people.
