So, now you know how to say you like something and how to express if you like it a little or a lot. Your host family in Lyon will appreciate knowing that tu aimes beaucoup le chocolat (you really like chocolate), but that tu n’aimes pas les tomates (you don’t like tomatoes).

How about if you want to ask your host family what they like? Take a moment to review the different ways to format a question.

There are three ways to ask a question in French: intonation, inversion, and est-ce que.

Il aime le café? Does he like coffee?
Aime-t-il le café?
Est-ce qu’il aime le café?

You can use question words to be more specific.

If you wanted to ask your host sister if she likes soccer, you would say one of the following:

Est-ce que tu aimes le football?
Aimes-tu le football?
Tu aimes le football?

Say you already know that your host sister likes soccer. She’s always talking about famous French soccer players like Zinédine Zidane and Kylian Mbappe. If you also like soccer, you could ask her more specific questions.

Où aimes-tu jouer au foot? Where do you like to play soccer?
Quand est-ce que tu aimes jouer au foot? When do you like to play soccer?

Asking someone about their preferences is a great way to get to know a new friend. You can ask

Est-ce que tu aimes les ananas? Do you like pineapple?
J’aime mieux les fraises. I prefer strawberries.

Aimes-tu la couleur violet? Do you like the color purple?
Ah ouais! J’aime beaucoup le violet. Oh yeah! I really like purple.

Où aimes-tu manger les crêpes? Where do you like to eat crêpes?
J’aime les crêpes à La Crêperie du Major! I like the crêpes at La Crêperie du Major!

You can also use the verb aimer to ask

Est-ce que tu aimerais aller au cinéma avec moi? Would you like to go to the movies with me?
Oui, bien sûr, aimerais-tu aller au cinéma samedi ou dimanche? Sure, would you like to go to the movies Saturday or Sunday?

Aimes-tu Daniel? Do you like (romantically) Daniel?
Non, j’aime bien Daniel mais j’adore Michel. No, I like Daniel, but I love Michael.

Remember that aimer, like all language, is used in a context. So, your facial expressions, tone, and background information all play a role in how the other person will interpret what you mean!
