Franklin Roosevelt started battling the Depression immediately after taking office, through the programs of the New Deal.

Objectives

Students will:

  1. Identify New Deal programs.
  2. Describe different New Deal programs and their effectiveness in improving the economy.
  3. Discuss the CIO split from the AFL and its impact on organized labor.
  4. Explain the effects of the National Industrial Recovery Act and the Wagner Act.
  5. Compare and contrast the labor relations in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations.
  6. Evaluate major debates among historians concerning alternative interpretations of the FDR’s New Deal programs.

Skills Needed

Students must be able to:

  1. Assess the importance of labor unions.
  2. Explain how the Stock Market Crash of 1929 affected the economy immediately and over the next few months/years.
