Do you see a pattern? The digit in the ones place is 0. The digit in the tens place stays the same or grows by 1.

Let’s try rounding with this pattern. What is 47 rounded to the nearest 10?

47

Underline the digit in the ones place. This is the digit that will become 0.

47

Circle the digit in the tens place. This is the digit that will stay the same or grow by 1.

47

If the digit in the ones place is 4 or less, we round down to the nearest 10. If the digit in the ones place is 5 or more, we round up to the nearest 10. Say this poem to help you remember:

4 or less, let it rest.
5 or more, add 1 more.

47→ 5 __

7 is in the ones place. It is greater than 5, so the 4 in the tens place will grow by 1.

47→ 50

Change the 7 in the ones place to 0.

Number line: 40 through 50. A block dot on 47, and a yellow arrow pointing from 47 to 50. And, there is also a red circle around the number 50.

Check your answer using a number line. 47 rounded to the nearest 10 is 50. Great job!

Try it yourself! Round these numbers to the nearest 10. Use this number line to check your work.

Number line: 30 through 40
