Goal: Round a number to the nearest 10.

Maria wants to know about how many carrots are at the store. We can help her by rounding 37 to the nearest 10! Rounding changes a number so that it is easier to use. When we round to the nearest 10, we change the number to the closest whole ten. Whole tens are numbers that end with 0. These are numbers like 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, or 100. Let’s try rounding 37!

Number line: 30 to 40.

Find 37 on the number line.

Number line: 30 to 40. And, a black dot on the number 37.

Put a dot on 37.

Number line: 30 to 40. An arrow pointing from 37 towards 30 and an arrow pointing from 37 toward 40. Both 30 and 40 are highlighted

30 and 40 are benchmark numbers. They are the whole tens closest to 37.

Which whole 10 is closer to 37: 30 or 40?

Number line: 30 to 40. An arrow pointing from 37 to 40. The number 40 is circled in red.

40 is the closer whole 10! That means 37 rounded to the nearest 10 is 40.

How do we round numbers that are in the middle of two whole tens? Let’s try rounding 25 to the nearest 10.

Number line: 20 to 30. An arrow pointing towards 20 and an arrow pointing toward 30. Both 20 and 30 are highlighted

Great job! If the digit in the ones place is 4 or less, we round down to the nearest 10. If the digit in the ones place is 5 or more, we round up to the nearest 10.

Number line: 1 to 10. An arrow pointing towards 10 that says 'Round down' and an arrow pointing toward 20 that says 'Round up'.
