This tree takes up a lot of space and is very heavy. It is matter. The trunk, branches, and leaves are all matter. What other examples of matter do you see in this picture?

What about water? Does water take up space and have weight? It sure does. Water takes up space in lakes, rivers, streams, oceans, and many other places. You can tell it has weight when you take wet clothes out of the washing machine. They are heavier than when they are dry.

Does air take up space? Does it weigh anything? Yes, air takes up space and has weight. You can see that air takes up space because it fills the balloon. Air is very light, but it still has weight.
