You Can Do It!

Goal: Solve area word problems by decomposing a rectangle.

Remember, when you are trying to find the total area of something, you break it apart into smaller rectangular shapes. Then, you find the area of each part of the figure and add the sections together to get the total area. To find the total cost, you multiply the total area by the unit cost.

An area the left width is 5 inches the top lenght is 8 inches. The right sections width is 2 inches and its length is 3 inches.

\({5\;in \times 5\;in = 25\;in^2}\)

\({3\;in \times 2\;in = 6\;in^2}\)

\({25\;in^2 + 6\;in^2 = 31\;in^2}\)

Total area \({\times}\) cost per square unit \({=}\) Total cost of area.

31 in\({^2 \times}\) $2 per square inch \({=}\) $62

For each problem below, find the total area and cost of the figure. Look at each slide and click on the image to check your work.

You know your multiplication facts and how to solve for area and cost. Find the area of the figures using decomposition.

What is the total area?

An area with 2 sections the first section is 6 units in width and 8 units in length. The second section is 2 width by 2 length.

  1. 48 square units
  2. 52 square units
  3. 64 square units
  4. 4 square units

What is the total cost?

An area with the left width is 10 feet, the top length is 10 feet, the right width is 4 feet, and the bottom width is 6 feet, the cost is 2 dollar ft squared.

  1. $100
  2. $200
  3. $152
  4. $76

What is the total area?

An area with two sections. The first section is 6 units wide and 7 units in length. The second section is 6 units wide and 4 units in length. The cost is 5 dollar per square unit.

  1. 66 square units
  2. 42 square units
  3. 24 square units
  4. 330 square units
