Practice!

Goal: Can you compare centimeters and meters to similar-sized objects?

Are you ready to estimate some measurements? Before we get started, you will need a ruler, a meter stick, 10 pencils, and stacking bricks. You will also need to be near a kitchen counter.

Hands-On

Can you use your stacking bricks to make a tower that is about 10 centimeters tall?

Start by laying out your pencils like this:

10 pencils

As you build your tower, lay it down next to your pencils to estimate its height.

When you think your tower is about 10 centimeters tall, check it with your ruler!

Great job! Now can you make this tower about 1 meter tall?

You can work next to a kitchen counter as you build this tower. Remember, a kitchen counter is about a meter tall.
