Logan, 3 friends, and their troop leader are going on a campout so that the kids can earn their camping badges!
Logan says that the hike up Swallows Hill was great! The view seems endless! He suggests setting up camp and starting a campfire. The troop leader agrees.
There are 2 tents to set up. Four people can sleep in the larger tent, and one person can sleep in the smaller tent. One of the badges is an area badge.
The boys need to find the area of each tent. How will they do it?
Can you help find the areas of both tents?
The boys decide to use multiplication to find area. They remember that to find the area, you multiply the length by the width.
Logan says they should look at the first tent. The length of the tent is 10 feet, and the width is 7 feet. If the area is the length times the width, then 10 feet times 7 feet equals 70 square feet.
The other tent is 14 feet in length and 10 feet in width.
What multiplication sentence shows the area of this tent?
Take a look! Were you right?
Can you find the area? Logan and the other scouts found the area, and it is 140 square feet.
The campers split into 2 groups of two and start to measure spaces on the ground for each tent.
Is there a space for each tent? Yes!
There is an area of 80 square feet for the smaller tent. That tent needed at least 70 square feet!
There is an area of 160 square feet for the larger tent. That tent needed an area of at least 140 square feet!
The tents are up, and it is time to relax!
Thank you for helping the scouts get their area badges!
