Logan is learning how to play tennis. He needs to measure the length between his feet. He also needs to measure the length between himself and his racket. Can you help him measure to the nearest half inch?

You will use an inch ruler to measure to the nearest half inch. Logan will put a line above the ruler, starting at 0. It is up to you to see where the line ends on the ruler and find the half-inch mark. Is the end of the line closer to one of the numbers or to the half-inch line between them? Then, you will tell Logan about how long the line is so that he knows the lengths to play tennis! Are you ready to get started?

Logan needs to know how to stand to be ready to play. The first length he wants to measure is how far apart his feet should be when he stands. Logan drew this line to show the correct length. Here is a ruler. Logan will make sure the line starts at 0. Where does the line end?

Between 8 and 9 on the ruler!

Now you need to measure to the nearest half inch. Where is the half-inch line between 8 and 9 on the ruler?

Here! The line ends between the half-inch line and 9 on the ruler. Is the line closer to 9 or to the half-inch line?

9! The length of the line is about 9 inches. Logan needs to place his feet about 9 inches apart!

Now Logan needs to know how to hold his racket. The second length he wants to measure is how far his racket should be from his body to hit the ball. Logan drew this line to show the correct length. He will make sure the line starts at 0. Where does the line end?

Between 11 and 12 on the ruler!

Now you need to measure to the nearest half inch. Where is the half-inch line between 11 and 12 on the ruler?

Here! The line ends between 11 and the half-inch line on the ruler. Is the line closer to 11 or to the half-inch line?

The half-inch line! The length of the line is about 11 1/2 inches. Logan needs to put his racket 11 1/2 inches in front of his body to hit the ball.

Thank you for helping Logan learn more about how to play tennis! He can't wait to start playing!
