Aquatics - Treading Water

Arm Movement

Hitting Grip

Technique:

  • When first learning this skill, a pool noodle can be used.
  • Try to stay relaxed. Tensing up will make it more difficult.
  • Hold head high and tipped back a little.
  • Arm Movement - You will need to move your arms to help you stay afloat.

Sculling

Hitting Grip

Sculling:

  • Move your arms out in front of you.
  • Slightly bend at the elbow.
  • Hold fingers together and cup your hands.
  • Move your arms and hands back and forth through the water, like you are frosting a cake.

Leg Movement:

  • Leg Movement - Kicking your legs will help you keep your head above the water.

Scissor Kick

Hitting Grip

Scissor Kick:

  • Keep your legs straight with your knees locked.
  • Move your legs back and forth slowly, like a pair of scissors.

Flutter Kick

Hitting Grip

Flutter Kick:

  • Keep your ankles relaxed.
  • Move your legs back and forth very quickly, like butterfly wings.
  • This kick uses the most energy.

Egg Beater Kick

Hitting Grip

Egg Beater Kick:

  • Uses the least energy.

Skill Activities:

  • Practice sculling out of the water until you are comfortable.
  • See how long you can tread water.
  • Challenge a friend to see who can tread water longer.
  • Try the different kicks.
