Goal: Learn how to tell time with clock hands.
Seth the Sloth has some advice for learning time to the half hour: “Relax. You got this!”
When the long minute hand is on the 12, we are at zero minutes. The short hand on the clock shows the hour.
What time is shown on the clock above?
It is 3 o’clock, or 3:00!
Seth has a playdate at 3:30. How would that look on his clock? If we look at the long hand to show the minutes, we can count halfway around the clock to the 6. When the minute hand is on the 6, we can say it’s half past, or 30 minutes past, the hour.
This clock shows 3:30. To find half past the hour, we count 30 minutes. The minute hand will be on the 6. The shaded part on the clock shows that the minute hand traveled from the 12 to the 6, or 30 minutes. This is what the clock would look like when it is half past 3 o’clock. Notice the hour hand is between 3 and 4. Let’s take a closer look!
Seth’s playdate is at 3:30. There is something special about the hour hand. Look closely and you will see that the hour hand moved between 3 and 4. Because the hour hand is between the 3 and the 4, we use the smaller number for the hour. Do you know which is the smaller number? That’s right, it is the 3! The time is 3:30, or half past 3 o’clock.
We know when the minute hand points at the 6, the time is half past the hour. When the hour hand is between two numbers, the smaller number tells the hour
