Sloth Jungle Time to the Half Hour

Well, well, well, it seems Seth the Sloth didn’t miss his nap time. Let’s wake him up so he can help us tell time to the half hour! Wake up, Seth! We need your help!

Sloths may be slow, but they sure are smart. Seth the Sloth is now ready to hang out. He is an expert at telling time to the half hour. It’s time to learn!

Seth is going to use his watch to teach us time. Can you see what time is showing on his watch? It’s 1 o’clock! The long hand is on the 12 to show 0 minutes, and the short hand is on the 1 to show the hour. Do you remember how many hours are on a clock? That’s right! There are twelve hours on a clock.

However, if we go half way, or 30 minutes, past the hour on a clock, it will show half past the hour.

When the long hand is on the 6, it is always half past, or 30 minutes past, the hour. Take a look at the time now. It’s 1:30!

Just as with time to the hour, we can show time to the half hour on a clock too.

Can you tell the time on Seth the Sloth’s clock? The long hand is on the 6, and the short hand is between 8 and 9. Remember, when the short hand is between hours, you always use the smaller number. The time is half past the hour.

Seth the Sloth lets Mica tell the time, and he for sure knows what time it is! It’s half past 3! Samantha reminds them it can also be 3:30 because the long hand is at 6, and that is 30 minutes.

Bella changes the time and wants her friends to tell the new time. It’s 6:30! Bella knows they are right, because 6:30 is the best time, hands down.

Sloth can’t help but smile. Hector thinks he is so smart! Seth shows Hector his clock and asks him what time it is.

Hector can’t stop laughing. It’s just too easy. It’s 9:30, or half past 9.

Hector changes the clock and asks Seth to tell the time.

Seth takes his time decides it’s 12:30! Hector is impressed. Not bad for a sloth.
