What is migration?

What do you think happens when an animal cannot find enough food to eat? What happens if it gets too cold where they live? Animals do not just hang around and hope things get better. They migrate.

Migration means to move from one habitat to another. When animals migrate, they do it during a particular season. Animals migrate for different reasons. Sometimes, they migrate for one reason. Other times, they migrate for a combination of reasons. Click on each picture below to find out more about why animals move from one habitat to another.

Seasons: Some animals migrate when temperatures get colder or warmer when the seasons change.

Food: If food is scarce or hard to find, some animals migrate to places with more food.

Babies: Other animals migrate to have their babies in safer places or to lay eggs in the same place where they were hatched.
