Ava is ready to make her soccer banner. She wants to measure the things she draws. Can you help her estimate and then measure to the nearest whole number?
You will estimate the length of an item by imagining the length of an inch. It helps to think of a paper clip, which is about 1 inch long! Then you will use Ava’s ruler to measure to the nearest whole number on the ruler. The numbers will tell you about how many inches long the item is.
Ava wants to draw a soccer ball on her banner. She draws a line to start one of the pentagons in her soccer ball. Ava wants to know how long this line is. Can you help her estimate and measure to make the rest of the pentagon? Start by thinking about how many paper clips would fit across the line.
1 paper clip would fit across the line! Here’s a paper clip to show you. That means the line is about 1 inch long.
Now you can use Ava’s ruler to measure to the nearest whole number, or inch. Ava will line up the ruler for you so that the line starts at 0. Where does the line end on the ruler?
Between the 1 and 2! Is the line closer to the 1 or to the 2?
The line is closer to the 1! That means the line is about 1 inch long, just like what you estimated. Ava is ready to draw the rest of her soccer ball!
Now Ava would like to draw a soccer field behind her soccer ball. She starts by drawing a line at the bottom of the banner. Ava wants to know how long this line is. Then she can finish drawing her soccer field! Start by estimating. About how long do you think this line is? Think about the size of a paper clip and one of the lines on the hexagon on the soccer ball.
About 10 inches!
Now use Ava’s ruler to measure the line to the nearest whole number. The line starts at 0. Where does the line end on the ruler?
Between the 9 and 10! Is the line closer to the 9 or to the 10?
The line is closer to the 10! That means the line is about 10 inches long, just like what you estimated. Ava is ready to draw the rest of her soccer field!
Look at Ava’s super soccer banner! She can’t wait to share her favorite sport with her classmates!
