Sound All Around

It’s a rainy day, and Enrique and Maddie are stuck inside. What should they do?

Maddie has an idea. They have been learning about sound in class, so they decide to see what sounds they can make with objects they can find around the house.

First, they go to the kitchen where they see pots and pans to clang together. Maybe they could make a pot and pan band. It’s too loud, and Enrique’s mom may not like that.

Next, they go back to the living room and see a party favor. That has a high-pitched sound.

That gives Enrique an idea. What if they make their own instruments?

Enrique finds an empty tissue box and some different sized rubber bands. Maddie wonders what he is going to do with those things.

Enrique carefully stretches the rubber bands over the tissue box, so that the bands are on top of the hole at the top.

Maddie plucks a rubber band. It vibrates and makes a sound. Enrique plucks another. It’s like a guitar.

Maddie makes her own guitar, and they decorate and play their new instruments for the rest of the day. What a fun rainy day!
