Can you solve a multiplication word problem by writing an equation and drawing a picture? Here are our problem-solving steps:

Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Read the problem.
  2. Look for important information.
  3. Write a math sentence.
  4. Choose a way to solve.
  5. Solve and label your answer.

You will need a piece of paper and a pencil. Write the word problem below on your piece of paper. Then follow the steps to solve the problem. Click on the tabs to see how!

Step 1: Read the problem

9 zebras. A piece of paper with the word problem: There are 9 toy zebras in the zoo gift shop. Each
zebra has 7 stripes. How many stripes do the zebras
            have in total?

Step 2: Look for important information

What are the factors? Circle them on your piece of paper. Then click the Show Me button to check your answer.

9 zebras. A piece of paper with the word problem: There are 9 toy zebras in the zoo gift shop. Each
zebra has 7 stripes. How many stripes do the zebras
have in total? 9 and 7 are circled.

Nice work! The factors are 9 and 7.

Step 3: Write a math sentence

Use the factors to write an equation. Leave the product blank. Click the Show Me button to check your work.

9 zebras. A piece of paper with the word problem: There are 9 toy zebras in the zoo gift shop. Each
zebra has 7 stripes. How many stripes do the zebras
have in total? 9 and 7 are circled. 9 times 7.

Step 4: Choose a way to solve

Find the product by drawing a picture! Once your picture is complete, click the Show Me button to check your work.

9 zebras. A piece of paper with the word problem: There are 9 toy zebras in the zoo gift shop. Each
zebra has 7 stripes. How many stripes do the zebras
have in total? 9 and 7 are circled. 9 times 7. 9 groups of 7.

That is right! Your picture should have 9 circles with 7 objects in each circle. This shows 9 \({ \times }\) 7.

Step 5: Solve and label your answer

Use your multiplication picture to find the product of 9 \({ \times }\) 7. Then write it on the empty line of your equation. Click the Show Me button to check your work when you are done!

9 zebras. A piece of paper with the word problem: There are 9 toy zebras in the zoo gift shop. Each
zebra has 7 stripes. How many stripes do the zebras
                    have in total? 9 and 7 are circled. 9 times 7 = 63. 9 groups of 7.

Now you have one last thing to do to answer the problem. You need to label the product to answer how many stripes the zebras have in total.

Write your answer and add the label. Click the Show Me button to check your work!

9 zebras. A piece of paper with the word problem: There are 9 toy zebras in the zoo gift shop. Each

                    have in total? 9 and 7 are circled. 9 times 7 = 63. 9 groups of 7. 63 stripes.

You did it! There are a total of 63 stripes on the toy zebras.

Now it is time for you to write an equation and draw a picture on your own! Write this word problem on your paper. Write an equation and draw a picture to find the product.
