Let’s Learn!

Do you know the parts of a division sentence?

Goal:

Goal:

Think About It!

Goal: Define and identify the parts of a division sentence.

Daniel wants to learn more about astronauts and what they do! He learned that the space program has 45 astronauts. There are 9 rockets. Each rocket can carry 5 astronauts. The astronauts are divided into equal groups to board the rockets!

45 astronauts

We divide by splitting up a big group of items and putting the items into smaller equal groups. We write a division sentence when we divide. A division sentence has a dividend, a division symbol, a divisor, an equal sign, and a quotient.

dividend divided by divisor equals quotient

Click each word in the table to learn more about each part of a division sentence! Once we learn the parts, we can solve our problem about astronauts!

The dividend is the total number of items. It is the biggest number and the first number in the division sentence.

The divisor is the number of groups. It is the second number in the division sentence.

The quotient is the number of items in each group. It is the answer and the last number in the division sentence.

? divided by ? equals ?. First question mark - Nine above and dividend below. Second question mark - 27 above and divisor below. Third question mark - 3 above and quotient below.

Look at the numbers: 27, 9, and 3. Which number is the dividend? The biggest number is always the dividend. That is because the dividend is the total number of items. 27 is the dividend!

Which number is the divisor? Which number is the quotient? The 9 or the 3 can be either! There are 9 groups with 3 items in each group when 9 is the divisor and 3 is the quotient. There are 3 groups with 9 items in each group when 3 is the divisor and 9 is the quotient. There are still 27 total items. The items are put into different groups in two different ways! This creates two different division sentences!

Click each box to see the two division sentences and their equal groups.

27 \({ \div }\) 9 = 3

nine groups of three

27 \({ \div }\) 3 = 9

three groups of nine

Click each tab to find the parts of a division sentence using the astronauts!

Nine groups of five ? divided by ? equals ?. First question mark - 5 above and dividend below. Second question mark - 9 above and divisor below. Third question mark - 45 above and quotient below.

There are 45 astronauts in the space program. There are 9 rockets. Each rocket can carry 5 astronauts. Which number is the dividend? Click the Show Me button to see each part of the division sentence!

45 divided by ? equals ?

45 is the dividend. It is the biggest number and the total number of astronauts.

45 is the dividend. There are two numbers left, 5 and 9.

45 divided by ? equals ?

There are 9 rockets. Each rocket can carry 5 astronauts. Which number is the divisor? Click the Show Me button to see!

45 divided by 9 equals ?

9 is the divisor. It is the number of rockets and the number of groups. 5 is the number in each group.

9 is the divisor.

Nine groups of five 45 divided by 9 equals ?

That means 5 is the quotient! Each rocket can carry 5 astronauts. 5 is the number in each group.

Question:

What is 45 \({ \div }\) 9?

45 divided by 9 equals 5

That means the 45 astronauts are divided into 9 groups of 5. The picture above shows 9 groups of 5 astronauts.

What happens if we switch the divisor and quotient?

five groups of nine

There are 45 astronauts in the space program. There are 5 rockets. Each rocket can carry 9 astronauts. The dividend, 45, is the same.

Question:

What is 45 \({ \div }\) 5?

45 divided by 5 equals 9

That means the 45 astronauts are divided into 5 groups of 9. The picture above shows 5 groups of 9 astronauts!

Knowing how to find the dividend, divisor, and quotient helps us understand more about dividing!
