Balloons

How many balloons are there? We can multiply to find out! Multiplication is adding groups with the same number. We can add the groups using repeated addition. Repeated addition is an addition sentence that uses the same number for all of the addends.

How many groups times number in each group

The number of addends tells us how many groups there are. The repeated addend tells us how many are in each group. Let’s use repeated addition to multiply!

We need an addition sentence to multiply. Here are the balloons in groups.

Balloons

____ + ____ + ____ + ____ = ?

There are 4 blanks in this addition sentence because there are 4 groups of balloons! We need to know how many are in each group to find the repeated addend.

How many balloons are in each group?

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = ?

____ X ____ = ?

What multiplication sentence has 4 groups with 4 in each group? Click mock yellow show-me button to see!

We know that 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 is also 4 x 4!

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = ?

4 X 4 = ?

How do we find the answer? We can draw a picture to help us!

Here are 4 circles to show the 4 groups. We will put dots in each circle to show the number in each group.

4 circles

How many dots should go in each circle?

4 circles with 4 balloons in each circle

Now, we can use our picture to find the answer. Add the first two groups. 4 + 4 = 8. Then, add another 4. 8 + 4 = 12. Add the last group of 4 to get the number of balloons!

What is 12 + 4?

We can write multiplication sentences by using addition sentences. Then, we can draw to help us multiply!
