A Path to Meaning
How can your friends help you figure out what something means?
Goal:
Goal:
Some people see literature as a message with a hidden meaning. They think that to understand a story or a poem completely, you have to "find" its hidden meaning. A collaborative discussion is a different approach to understanding literature.
When people collaborate, they work together to create something, in the same way that musicians often collaborate to create songs. A collaborative discussion about literature is a chance to create--not find--meaning in what you have read.
Suppose your discussion group, including Anna and Tyler, meets to talk about the story "Thank You, M'am." How might you use collaborative discussion to build a deeper understanding of the story? Click each photo and then the play button next to it to see how that student might add to the discussion.

Question
What did Tyler add to Anna's comment about how strong Mrs. Jones seems?
Tyler added that he thought Mrs. Jones was probably not as physically strong as she seems but that her personality is a lot stronger than Roger's--so she can make him do what she says without fighting hard enough to get away.
