Goal: Could you partition shapes into a given number of equal parts like Caleb?
Caleb got an after-school job at a local pizzeria. His job is to cut the pizzas and breadsticks into equal sized pieces. Let’s watch how he figures out how to slice everything up!
Caleb is starting to help his cousin at his cousin's pizzeria. Caleb will be slicing up the pizzas and breadsticks after they are made.
Inside the pizzeria, Caleb gets set up at his section of the counter. The first pizza he is given is a medium vegetarian pizza. Medium pizzas are cut into 8 equal-size pieces.
Caleb starts by cutting a vertical line down the middle of the pizza. Then, he cuts a horizontal line across the middle of the pizza. This makes a total of 4 equal-size pieces of pizza.
Caleb then cuts 2 diagonal lines. The diagonal lines cut each of the 4 pieces in half. This makes a total of 8 pieces of pizza. When he is done, he has to yell out “Pizza!”.
The next pizza Caleb is given is a large Hawaiian pizza. Large pizzas are cut into 10 equal-size pieces.
Caleb starts by cutting a vertical line down the middle of the pizza. Then, he cuts an “X” shape diagonally through the middle of the pizza. This makes 4 equal-size pieces and 2 bigger pieces.
Caleb then cuts another “X” shape into the 2 large pieces of pizza. The diagonal lines cut each of the 2 larger pieces into 3 pieces each. This makes a total of 10 equal- size pieces of pizza. Caleb then yells out “Pizza!” so that the server can take it to the customers.
Next, Caleb is given a large tray of breadsticks. A large tray of breadsticks gets cut into 16 equal-size pieces.
Caleb starts by cutting a vertical line down the middle of the breadsticks. Then, he cuts a horizontal line across the middle of the breadsticks. This makes a total of 4 equal-size pieces
Caleb then cuts 2 more horizontal lines. The horizontal lines cut each of the 4 pieces into 2 pieces each. This makes a total of 8 equal-sized pieces.
Finally, Caleb cuts 4 more horizonal lines. Each line cuts 8 pieces into 2 equal-sized pieces. This makes a total of 16 equal-size breadsticks. Now that Caleb is finished, he yells out “Pizza!” Then, he looks around and says, “Should I have called out breadsticks instead?”
