Zoe wants to make healthy snacks that have enough calories for her class party. She knows that calories will give her classmates energy!

You will use patterns and an addition table to count the calories in each ingredient. First, you will look for the patterns that you can use. Then you will use an addition table to find the sum. Zoe will write down each calorie count you find. Are you ready to help Zoe count the calories with addition patterns?

Zoe made her own granola bites! She says that there are oats and raisins in them. The oats in one bite are 7 calories. The raisins are 7 calories. How many calories are in one granola bite? You can use the addition sentence 7 plus 7 to find the total number of calories. Here is an addition table you can use to find the sum. You need to look for patterns first. What do you notice about 7 and 7?

The 7s are both odd numbers! That means that their sum will be an even number

Can you use another pattern?

No. If you don’t see a 0 or a 10, it’s time to look at the addition table! Here’s 7 in the first column and 7 in the first row. What is their sum? Find the square where the column with 7 in it and the row with 7 in it meet. 7 plus 7 equals…

14! 14 is an even number. You were right! Each granola bite has 14 calories. Zoe wrote down what you found. Are you ready to help her count calories one more time?

Zoe made a smoothie with berries and kale. In one small cup of smoothie, Zoe says there are 9 calories from the berries. There are 0 calories from the kale. You can use the addition sentence 9 plus 0 to find the total number of calories. What do you notice about 9 and 0?

9 is an odd number, and 0 is an even number! That means that their sum will be an odd number. Here is an addition table you can use to find the sum.

Can you use another pattern?

Yes! 0 is one of the addends. The pattern of adding 0 to a number says that the sum will be the same as the non-zero number. That means 9 plus 0 should equal 9! Use the addition table to see if you are right. 9 plus 0 equals…

9! 9 is an odd number. It is also the same number as the non-zero addend. You are right! Each small cup of smoothie has 9 calories. Zoe wrote down what you found.

You did a great job using addition patterns and an addition table to count the calories. Zoe can’t wait to give her healthy, energy-filled snacks to her classmates!

Question

Look at the addends below. Do you think their sum will be even or odd? Which addition table pattern can you use?

\({7 + 2 = ?}\)

addition chart

A addition chart with the 2 highlighted in the top row and the 7 highlighted in the left column. Where do they meet?

You can use odd + even = odd. 7 is an odd number, and 2 is an even number, so the sum will be odd. There is no 0 and no 10, so you cannot use those patterns.
