Goal: Can you figure out what fraction each equal part of the sliced fruit represents?
Daniel went to the grocery store to get some sliced fruit for his mom. He wasn't expecting to be helped by a fruit ninja! Watch the video below to see how Daniel's fruit gets partitioned into equal parts.
Daniel stops at the fruit stand on his way home from school to pick up some sliced fruit. When he gets there, none of the fruit is sliced.
Suddenly, a ninja appears! This startles Daniel. After Daniel calms down, he asks if the ninja could slice some fruit for him. The ninja looks at him and nods.
Daniel first asks the ninja to slice up a pear. Before Daniel can say how many pieces he would like, the ninja throws the pear high into the air, pulls out his sword, and slices the fruit so fast Daniel sees only a flash of light!
The next thing Daniel sees is the pear sliced into 4 equal pieces. Whoa! Daniel looks at the pieces and realizes that each piece is \(\Large\frac{1}{4}\) of the whole pear.
Daniel then asks the ninja to slice up a kiwi. Before Daniel can say how many pieces he would like, the ninja throws the kiwi high into the air, pulls out his sword, and slices the fruit so fast Daniel sees only a flash of light!
The next thing Daniel sees is the kiwi sliced into 6 equal pieces. Whoa! Daniel looks at the pieces and realizes that each piece is \(\Large\frac{1}{6}\) of the whole kiwi.
Daniel then asks the ninja to slice up a watermelon. Again, before Daniel can say anything, the ninja throws the watermelon high into the air, pulls out his sword, and slices the fruit so fast Daniel sees only a flash of light!
The next thing Daniel sees is the watermelon sliced into 8 equal pieces. Whoa! Daniel looks at the pieces and notices that each piece is \(\Large\frac{1}{8}\) of the whole watermelon.
Daniel then asks the ninja to slice up an orange. Again, the ninja throws the orange high into the air, pulls out his sword, and slices the fruit so fast Daniel sees only a flash of light!
This time the ninja sliced the orange in half. Daniel looks closely at the cut fruit and counts the sections of orange. He sees there are 9 sections, which means each section is \(\Large\frac{1}{9}\) of the whole orange.
Daniel never thought he'd be learning about fractions at a fruit stand. Well, he also never thought he'd meet a real fruit ninja either!
Question
If the fruit ninja sliced a banana into 12 pieces, what fraction would each equal part represent?
Each equal part would represent \(\Large\frac{1}{12}\) of the whole banana.
