Let’s watch a video about adding to 10!
We can use ten frames to practice adding to ten. You can join the classroom to see how it works! You will see one ten frame with some dots. There will also be empty squares with no dots. Counting the empty squares is the key to adding to ten! Watch the video to see how it works.
Teacher: Today we are going to find the numbers that add to 10.
Student: That means we are putting two numbers together to make 10!
Teacher: That’s right! We are going to use ten frames to help us.
Student: I see that the ten frame has 10 spaces.
Teacher: Yes! When all of the spaces are filled, we have 10. We will
use the spaces that
are filled and empty to find the numbers that go together.
Student: Okay! I’m ready to find the numbers that add to 10.
Teacher: Great! Here are ten frames with dots in them. We will match up
the numbers that
make 10. How many dots are in this ten frame?
Student: This ten frame has 1 dot in it.
Teacher: How many empty spaces does it have?
Student: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. This ten frame has 9 empty spaces.
Teacher: That means we need a ten frame with 9 dots to make 10.
Student: Hm, this ten frame has 9 dots in it. 1 and 9 make 10!
Teacher: We will use a plus sign to show that we are adding. These two
ten frames show 1
plus 9. Let’s find more ten frames that make 10. How many dots are in this ten frame?
Student: There are 2 dots in this ten frame. I see the ten frame has 8
empty spaces.
Does that mean I need to do a ten frame with 8 dots to make 10?
Teacher: Exactly! Do you see a ten frame that has 8 dots in it?
Student: This one! 2 and
8 make 10. That means 2 plus 8 makes 10!
Teacher: That’s right! We have 1 plus 9 and 2 plus 8. Can we find any
other numbers that
make 10?
Student: I see a ten frame that has 3 dots in it. It has 7 empty
spaces. Here’s a ten
frame with 7 dots in it. 3 plus 7 makes 10!
Teacher: You’ve got it! Keep going!
Student: I see a ten frame that has 4 dots in it. It has 6 empty
spaces. Here’s a ten
frame with 6 dots in it. 4 plus 6 makes 10!
Teacher: Excellent! There are only two ten frames left!
Student: Yes! I see two ten frames that have 5 dots in them. 5 plus 5
makes 10!
Teacher: Wow! You found all of the matches. You can also have the
numbers switch places.
Be- cause we are adding, it doesn’t matter which number goes first!
Student: Wow! It was so helpful to use ten frames to find the numbers
that add up to 10!
Look at the ten frame below.
Choose the ten frame that makes 10 when you add it to the ten frame above!
Incorrect. The first ten frame has 6 empty spaces, so you need to find the ten frame with 6 dots. This ten frame has 8. Try again!
Incorrect. Incorrect. Remember to count the empty spaces on the ten frame above. There are 6 empty spaces. You need to find a ten frame that has 6 dots to make 10! Try again!
Correct! 4 and 6 makes 10! So, 4 + 6 is also an addition fact of 10.
