Bears are the best-known hibernators. But do you know any other animals that hibernate in the winter? Click on the animal pictures on the left side of the table below to find out more about some of the animals that hibernate.

Skunks hibernate in dens underground. They dig these dens with their sharp claws.

When the temperatures get too cold, bats hibernate in caves hanging upside down. When the temperature warms up again, they wake up.

Bumblebee queens dig into the ground and hibernate for the winter. In the spring, they dig themselves out to begin laying eggs.

Garter snakes hibernate in rodent burrows underground or in between rocks. They know it is time to hibernate when the days get shorter in the fall.

Hedgehogs hibernate in nests in piles of leaves or in safe places under houses.

Bears have their babies while they are hibernating. When the spring comes, the babies are ready to venture out with their mother to learn how to be a bear.
