Each plant and animal plays an important part in the life of a pond. After a plant dies, it breaks down and helps to make the soil richer so that more plants will grow. Dead plants are food for tiny living things in the water.

The animals and plants in the pond are living because they eat, breathe, grow, and change. The animals also move and have babies. For example, plants grow up toward the sunlight, and tadpoles develop into frogs. The stones around the pond are nonliving because they do not eat, breathe, move, grow, change, or have babies.
