“I’ve put 20 pieces of candy on your desk.”

“Yum!”

“I would like you to sort these pieces of candy into 2 groups.”

“Sort them into 2 groups? Okay! Let’s see, some of the candies are pink and some

are yellow. I’ll put the pink candies here and the yellow candies here.”

“That’s a great idea.”

“Oh no! I have some candy leftover.”

“Can you sort them into the pink or yellow groups?”

“No, these candies are different colors.”

“That’s right. Let’s try again. I’d like you to sort the candies into 2 groups.”

“Hmmm, I could try making a group of hard candy and a group of soft candy.”

“Uh oh, I see a few candies leftover.”

“These candies are hard on the outside and soft in the inside. They don’t fit into

either of my groups.”

“Let’s try once more. Think about the size of the candies when you sort them.”

“Oh, I know! I can make a group of small candies and a group of big candies!”

“Very good!”

“These candies are small. Look how tiny they are! I can fit so many of these

candies in my hand. These candies are big. I can only fit a few in my hand because

they are so big.”

“I see that you have sorted the candy into 2 groups: small candies and big candies.

Well done!”
