We can move letters so that they flip, slide, and
turn!
Let’s look at some
examples so you
can learn about these movements. Get your fingers warmed up so you can practice flips,
slides, and turns. Click through the slides below to learn what these terms mean.
Look at these two pictures. Are they both the letter R?
Yes, they are both the letter R! The second one has been
turned. We took the
R and turned it on its back! We can also turn this letter R the other way.
What would that look like? Draw it in your notes, then click the Show Me
button.
This time, we turned the R forward.
You
can practice with
your finger! Make a lowercase r by making your pointer
finger into a hook. Start with it straight up, then turn it
forward and backward. You are moving a shape by turning it!
We can turn the letter R without picking it up! Notice that the legs of the R
move one turn to the left or one turn to the right, depending on which way
we turn it. If we turn the R to the left, the legs of the R face the right.
If we turn the R to the right, the legs of the R face the left. Did we pick
up the R to turn it? No! The R stays flat as we turn it one way or the
other.
Let’s learn another way to move shapes! Look at these letters. What is
different about the second F?
Did you figure it out? The second F has been flipped! We
took the first F and
flipped it upside-down to make it look like the second F. Did we have to
pick up the F to flip it? Yes! The top of the F came up off the surface to
lay it at the bottom! To flip a shape, we need to pick it up.
As you flip shapes, you can imagine a pancake! You have to pick up the
pancake to flip it. Use the picture below to help you think about flipping.
We could also flip side to side, too! What would that look like? Draw it in
your notes, then click Show Me.
Did we pick up the F to flip it to
the side? Yes! We flipped it like a pancake.
We can flip the F down or to the side!
You can practice this movement for another letter with your fingers. Make
the letter L with your pointer and thumb. Move your wrist to make your L
face the other direction! You are flipping the letter side to side. You can
also move the top of the L to point down. Great job learning how to flip a
shape!
Now, look at one more. What has been done to the second Q?
That’s correct! The second Q took a slide to the left and down! Can it also
slide to the right? It sure can! What would that look like?
Do we have to pick up the letter Q to slide it? No! It stays right in place
but moves along the surface.
You can practice with your fingers! Make the letter O, and practice moving it
from side to side. You are sliding the letter O!
Slide:
Look at the letter B below. How did it move?

Incorrect. A B that has been flipped would look like this:
Correct! The letter just moved to the right, but it looks the same!
Incorrect. The turned B would look different. A turned letter B looks
like this:
