Think About It!
Goal: Identify pennies, nickels, and dimes.
All coins have a value. Value is how much something is worth. The size of a coin does not tell its value. We add the value of different coins to get a total amount in cents. The symbol ¢ means cents.
Let’s identify coins and their value!
| Coins | Value of Coins |
|---|---|

1 penny = 1 cent, or 1¢ |

1 nickel = 5 cents, or 5¢ |

1 dime = 10 cents, or 10¢ |
Stripes the Cat is going to guide us in counting coins. Let’s follow Stripes on this coin-counting adventure!
The value of a penny is equal to 1 cent, or 1¢. You can count pennies by counting by 1s.

How many pennies do you see?
What is the value of 5 pennies?
You can count their value by 1s, so 1¢, 2¢, 3¢, 4¢, 5¢.
You can use repeated addition to find the value of 5 pennies: 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent = 5 cents.
5 pennies = 5 cents, or 5¢.
Now, you try! What is the value of 3 pennies?
You can skip count their value by 1s, so 1¢, 2¢, 3¢.
You can use repeated addition to find the value of 3 pennies: 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent = 3 cents.
3 pennies = 3 cents, or 3¢.
The value of a nickel is 5 cents, or 5¢. You can skip count nickels by counting by 5s.

How many nickels do you see?
What is the value of 5 nickels?
You can skip count their value by 5s, so 5¢, 10¢, 15¢, 20¢, 25¢.
You can use repeated addition to find the value of 5 nickels: 5 cents + 5 cents + 5 cents + 5 cents + 5 cents = 25 cents.
5 nickels = 25 cents, or 25¢.
Now, you try! What is the value of 3 nickels?
You can skip count their value by 5s, so 5¢, 10¢, 15¢.
You can use repeated addition to find the value of 3 nickels: 5 cents + 5 cents + 5 cents = 15 cents.
3 nickels = 15 cents, or 15¢.
The value of a dime is 10 cents, or 10¢. You can count dimes by skip counting by 10s.

How many dimes do you see?
What is the value of 5 dimes?
You can skip count their value by 10s, so 10¢, 20¢, 30¢, 40¢, 50¢.
You can use repeated addition to find the value of 5 dimes: 10 cents + 10 cents + 10 cents + 10 cents + 10 cents = 50 cents.
5 dimes = 50 cents, or 50¢.
Now, you try! What is the value of 3 dimes?
You can skip count by 10s to get 10¢, 20¢, 30¢.
You can use repeated addition to find the value of 3 dimes: 10 cents + 10 cents + 10 cents = 30 cents.
3 dimes = 30 cents, or 30¢.
Let’s mix it up with Stripes the Cat and find the value of different coins.

How many coins do you see?
Now, let’s add the value of the coins to find the total.
When you add different coins, start with the coins that have the largest value.
3 dimes, 2 nickels, 4 pennies
For 3 dimes, skip count by 10s = 10¢, 20¢, 30¢.
For 2 nickels, skip count by 5s = 5¢, 10¢.
For 4 pennies, we count the 1s = 1¢, 2¢, 3¢, 4¢
Add the coin values together to get the total: 30 cents + 10 cents + 4 cents = 44 cents.
| 30 | |
| 10 | |
| + | 4 |
| 44¢ | |
