Estimate Using Inches, Feet, and Yards Video

These are Josslyn’s toys. She wants to measure some of them, but she doesn’t have a ruler or a yardstick. Instead of using measuring tools, Josslyn will estimate, or guess, the measurements of her toys.

She knows that an inch is small, like a paper clip; a foot is a little larger, like the size of an adult foot; and a yard is the largest, like the length of a guitar.

Let’s start with Josslyn’s doll! She wants to know about how many inches tall it is. Let’s help her! Do you think this doll is: about 1 inch tall, about 4 inches tall, or about 11 inches tall?

Very good! The doll is about 11 inches tall, just under 1 foot.

Here is Josslyn’s toy train. About how many feet long is this train: 1 foot, 3 feet, or 7 feet?

Correct! The train is about 3 feet long.

Now what about the train track? It’s so long! About how many yards long is the track: 1 yard long, 2 yards long, or 4 yards long? Remember, a yard is about the length of a guitar.

You got it! The train track is about 4 yards long.

Look at this little marble. If Josslyn was to measure the length of this marble, would she measure in inches or feet?

That’s right, inches! Do you think this marble is: about 1 inch long, about 5 inches long, or about 8 inches long?

Very good! The marble is about 1 inch long.
