Madelyn and her friends are drinking hot cocoa. I wonder how much they have left. Let’s find out!

Here’s the first cup! It was full, and then Madelyn’s friend drank some. Only a fraction of the cocoa is left. Here’s that fraction recorded on a number line. Hmmm, what is it?

Let’s start by counting the spaces: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Great! The denominator is 6. What is the numerator? We can find out by counting the lines, starting at 0: 0, 1, 2. There we have it! The fraction is two sixths. Madelyn’s friend has two sixths of her cocoa left.

Here’s our next cup. What fraction of the cocoa is left?

Count the spaces. How many do you see? That’s right, 4! Now count the lines, starting at 0: 0, 1, 2, 3. Yes! This friend has three fourths of her cocoa left.

Now this is Madelyn’s cup. She has five eighths of her hot cocoa left. I wonder if we can record this fraction on a number line. The denominator is 8, so we’ll need 8 spaces. Perfect! The numerator is 5, so we’ll count to 5 starting at 0: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Wow, that looks great! Here’s five eighths on the number line.

Great job! Madelyn, we hope you and your friends enjoy your hot cocoa!
