Let’s play Snake Ladder! We need to get to 25 to win. Here are 2 dice for us to roll. Ready...set...roll!

We rolled 2 fives. How many spaces can we move? We need to multiply to find out.

Let’s use skip counting by 5s to help us multiply. Do you remember how to skip count by 5s? Take a look!

5, 10, 15, 20, 25!

We have 2 dice with 5 dots on them. This array will help us see the dots on the dice and multiply them.

First, we need a repeated addition sentence. There are two rows of 5 dots. That’s 5 plus 5!

What about a multiplication sentence? 2 rows of 5...that’s 2 times 5.

Let’s skip count by 5s two times to find the answer.

5...10! We can go 10 spaces on the board.

Ready to roll again? Oops! We dropped one of the dice. That’s okay! We can keep on playing! Let’s roll the die. Ready...set…roll!

Another 5! What numbered space should we move our game piece to?

We already had two 5s. Now we have three 5s. What array can we use to see the dots?

Yes! We can use a 3 by 5 array. Each die has 5 dots. There are 3 of them. Each row has 5 dots. There are 3 of them.

Let’s use repeated addition. How many addends do we need?

That’s right! We need 3 addends. That’s because there are 3 rows. What is the repeated addend?

Great job! 5 is the repeated addend. That’s because there are 5 dots in each row.

What about a multiplication sentence? We need the number of groups and the number in each group. How many groups are there?

3! There are 3 rows and 3 groups. How many are in each group?

5! There are 5 dots in each row and 5 in each group.

Let’s skip count by 5s three times to find the answer.

5...10...15! We can go to the space that has a 15 on it.

We aren’t at 25 yet! Let’s roll again! Ready...set...roll!

It’s another 5! Now we have four 5s.

Let’s make an array to help us solve. What array can we use to find the total number of spaces?

Yes! We can use a 4 by 5 array. This array has 4 rows with 5 dots in each. What repeated addition sentence matches this array?

That’s right! 5 plus 5 plus 5 plus 5. There are 4 addends because there are 4 rows. 5 is the repeated addend because there are 5 dots in each row.

What multiplication sentence matches the array?

Great job! 4 times 5 matches the array. 4 is the number of rows and the number of groups. 5 is the number in each row and the number in each group. Ready to skip count by 5s four times?

5...10...15...20! We can move our piece to the space with a 20 on it.

We are so close to winning the game! Let’s roll one more time. Ready...set...roll!

It’s one more 5! Now we have five 5s. Did we win? We need to multiply one more time to find out!

First, we need an array. What array can we use to help us find the total number of spaces?

Yes! We can use a 5 by 5 array. What repeated addition sentence matches the array?

That’s right! 5 plus 5 plus 5 plus 5 plus 5. What multiplication sentence matches the array and the repeated addition sentence?

Great job! 5 times 5.

Let’s skip count one more time. Are you ready? We need to skip count by 5s five times. Try it out on your own.

Did you get 25? 5, 10, 15, 20, 25! We made it to 25.

We won! You did a great job skip counting and multiplying!

Which skip-counting sequence matches the array?

4 by 5 array of blue dots

  1. 5, 10
  2. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18

That is right! There are 4 rows of 5. We will skip count by 5s four times.

Sorry, that is not right. There are 4 rows of 5. We will skip count by 5s four times.

Sorry, that is not right. There are 4 rows of 5. We will skip count by 5s four times.
