Zoe and Daniel arrive at the ice rink for the state figure skating championship.

While they are practicing in the rink, they notice that there are 10 judges setting up for the competition.

Because this is a big competition, there are 10 judges.

The judges will score the competitors the same.

If the competitors score an overall score of 10, that means that each judge gave them 1 point.

We can represent this using the division fact 10 divided by 10.

10 divided by 10 is equal to 1, so each judge gave a score of 1.

Let’s see how many points each judge will give if the competitors score 20 points.

How many points will each judge award?

We can represent this using the division fact 20 divided by 10. 20 is the total number of points, and 10 is the number of judges.

20 divided by 10 is 2, so each judge awards 2 points.

The championship starts!

Let’s see how Daniel and Zoe do.

They score a 70!

How many points did each judge award?

We can represent this using the division fact 70 divided by 10.

70 divided by 10 is 7, so each judge awarded 7 points to the pair.

Now the next pair start their routine.

They score 80 points!

How many points did each judge award?

Think about the multiplication fact of 10 that gives us the product 80.

We know that 10 times 8 equals 80, so 80 divided by 10 is 8.

8 points were awarded per judge.

The final pair complete their routine.

90 points!

How many points did each judge award?

Think about the multiplication fact of 10 that gives us the product 90.

We know that 10 times 9 equals 90, so 90 divided by 10 is 9. 9 points were awarded per judge.

They were the top scorers of the competition!

As the championship ends, the medals are awarded to the skaters who earned the highest scores.

Daniel and Zoe wonder how many points would be awarded per judge if the pair scored 100. Do you know?

Question:

If there are 10 judges, how many points will be awarded by each judge if there are 100 points overall?

We know 10 \({ \times }\) 10 \({ = }\) 100, so 100 \({ \div }\) 10 \({ = }\) 10. That means there will be 10 points awarded by each judge.
