Imagine that you have been commissioned to create a design for a new state flag. A committee has asked you to create a symbolic, recognizable, and well-designed flag to promote state pride and represent local heritage. You will appear before the committee of the state legislature to present your new design and justify the choices you have made for their flag. You'll need to explain what important information you felt should be represented in the flag and the symbolism you used to present that information.
The first step of this project will be to choose which state flag you will be redesigning. In the table below, find the row that contains the first letter of your first name. On that row will be two states, a territory, or a district. Choose one of the options that you will use for this project.

Once you have chosen your state, you will need to do some research for inspiration. Begin by researching the state. Click the Activity button below to open a worksheet to help you organize your research.
When finished, you will include this worksheet with your assignment, as it will be part of your grade. Once your research is finished and you've selected the symbols, colors, and placement, begin creating your design. You will submit a rough draft - get feedback - then make changes based on critique received and submit your final piece. The dimension of your work should be 10 inches wide and 5 inches high.
Critiquing
For this project you will be submitting your work for critique before you submit your final version to be graded. This is a great way to get feedback on your work before it is finalized and make any improvements. When you feel like your project is far enough along to represent your final idea, but before you finish your design, submit your work to be reviewed. Remember, how you use the feedback you receive is completely up to you. Your critique is intended to help improve your final grade.
Be sure to label each file with your name and the state name. This will make sure that your instructor can grade your work properly.
You will be graded using the following rubric:
