Is the amount of sugar people eat related to the number of cavities they have?

Has the earth’s temperature over thousands of years increased or decreased?

Does getting more sleep increase your concentration? These are examples of possible relationships between two different quantities.

In order to answer these questions and others like it, you can look at scatter plots of data and see if there is a linear function that models the relationship between the two quantities.

If there is such a relationship, you can make accurate predictions about the variables you are investigating.
