Here are few important things to remember about the technological design process. First, a design may have to go through several tests before you decide on a final version. The first few (or many) trails may fail. But you learn from each failure and try again. Also, there may be multiple solutions to a problem. Think of all the different types of cars that are on the road today. They are examples of multiple solutions to one need of society (transportation). You can be creative and think of varying ways to solve a single problem.
Also, many technologies involve tradeoffs. Tradeoffs are features that must be sacrificed to get the results you want. If cars are made lighter to get better gas mileage, they might not have as much passenger room. This is an example of a tradeoff. Or if a car is made safer, it might need to be larger and will then likely use more gas. This is another example of a tradeoff.

What is a tradeoff?
A tradeoff is one thing you sacrifice or go without in order to get something else.
