Most people develop moods, or attitudes, based on the circumstances of their lives. When things are good, they're in a good mood, and when things are bad, those same people might be depressed or irritable. In this part of The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne talks about her own moods and how her circumstances affect them.
As you read this portion of the diary, think about how you might react to the atmosphere that Anne describes.
Before continuing with this lesson, you should read the diary entries beginning with August 20, 1943 and ending with December 24, 1943, of The Diary of a Young Girl.
As you read, see if you can answer these questions for yourself:
How does Anne try to deal with the anxiety caused by living in close quarters?
What is causing tension between Mr. and Mrs. van Daan?
How would you describe Anne's relationship with her parents and sister?
Who does Hanneli represent to Anne, and why is she important?
After spending a year and a half in hiding, what are some of the things that Anne misses the most?
When you finish the reading assignment for this lesson (diary entries beginning with August 20, 1943 and ending with December 24, 1943), return to this lesson to complete the lesson quiz.
