Suppose someone needs help building a civilization. What would you tell them?

Cave Painting

Suppose some anthropologists discover a group of people who have been isolated from the effects of cultural diffusion since the beginning of time. This group survives by hunting and gathering, just as most humans did before civilizations developed. The newly discovered hunter-gatherers, faced with the effects of climate change and the movement of "civilized" groups into their hunting grounds, have decided they need to change the way they live. They need civilization.

How can the group now known as HG21 (Hunter-Gatherers in the 21st century) develop a civilization that will help them survive into the next century? They will need help from people like you who know how the world's civilizations began but who also understand what it means to live in the 21st century, with its unique demands and challenges.

What the people of HG21 need is a guidebook. For this project, you will create a guidebook for building a civilization, using what you learned from the lessons in this module. Your guidebook should include clear steps and stages that HG21 should follow in order to build their civilization. They will need help and resources, of course, which you should list somewhere in your guidebook. All resources will be provided by generous private and public donors who can't wait to see how HG21 will build in a few decades what it took the rest of us thousands of years to develop.

The Activity sheet below will help you get your project started. It includes several suggestions for how to organize your guidebook. Be sure to choose just one of these approaches--or to design your own approach. Remember to keep it simple--everything in your guidebook will be communicated to the people of HG21 in their own language, but you don't want to discourage them with two much information before they even start their great adventure.

This project should take you a couple of hours to complete, so don't expect to finish it today. In fact, if you are near the end of the time period you have set aside for World History, you may need to wait until tomorrow to start the project.
