Defining and Identifying Spheres

What makes an object a sphere?

Before we calculate the volume of different spheres, let’s define and identify them.

Let’s start with the definition of a sphere.

Definition of a Sphere

A sphere is a three-dimensional, round figure with a solid surface. Every point on the surface is the same distance from the center.

Is this shape a sphere? Use the definition to justify your response.

a three-dimensional shape where all points are equidistant from the center of the object and has no ends or flat spots

Examine this shape. It’s a three-dimensional figure with circles on both ends. Is this a sphere?

a three-dimensional shape that has two circular ends and parallel sides

Look at this three-dimensional shape. Is this shape a sphere? Why or why not?

a three-dimensional shape with one circular end where the sides taper upward to a point located at the top
