Like India, Bangladesh struggles with overpopulation. It is the ninth most populous country in the world. With about 131 million people, it has almost as many people as Mexico and Canada combined. And all of these people are squeezed into an area the size of Wisconsin.
Overpopulation and natural hazards have combined to create another problem: hunger. Malnutrition, a lack of food or an unbalanced diet, is an almost constant problem. The Green Revolution has helped to increase agricultural production. Still, the population is growing at a faster rate than the food supply is.
To add to its problems, Bangladesh has few roads or bridges. Most travel is by boat along its many waterways. Without massive aid, Bangladesh cannot improve its communications and transportation systems. Bangladesh thus faces some of the greatest challenges of any country in the world.
