Colors aren’t totally separate—colors can be produced by mixing several other colors in just the right proportion. Mastering the art of color mixing means learning how to reproduce any desired color by applying a few simple rules.

In this lesson, you want to begin to develop color mixing skills. First, you should ask what is color? Color is interesting, it exists only in light, but light itself appears colorless to the human eye. In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton discovered that white light is composed of all colors of the spectrum.

When you see a certain color on an object it is because some of the light bands are absorbed and some are reflected. A red surface absorbs most of the color spectrum but reflects the red portion. If all the wavelengths of light are absorbed by a surface it appears black. If all wavelengths are reflected it appears white.

What is a hue? A hue is the name we give to a band of light that we see. Red, yellow, green, and so on are hues. Hue and color are interchangeable terms.
