Did You Know?

Some verb stems in Spanish change from o to ue. Click each image below to learn about some of these verbs.

Before you use these verbs in conversation, take notes on their conjugatation. Just a few lessons ago, you learned the stem-changing verb jugar. Although it is an u to ue verb, it follows the same pattern. The only difference is the vowel that changes in the stem.

With these verbs, it is the o in the stem that changes to ue. Look at almorzar in the chart below. Notice that the stem, almorz‒, changes when the verb is conjugated in all forms except for the nosotros and vosotros forms. Almorzar is an o to ue stem-changer, so its stem becomes almuerz.

It is a good practice to copy the verb charts into your Spanish notebook. Use them as you continue studying Spanish. At first, you may have to refer to the charts often. With time, you will not need them as much.

almorzar
yo almuerzo almorzamos nosotros
almuerzas almorzáis vosotros
él
ella
usted
almuerza almuerzan ellos
ellas
ustedes

Keep conjugating! The other o to ue stem-changing verbs follow the same pattern. Write out the verb charts for contar, costar and encontrar in your notebook. Click though the charts below to reveal the correct present tense conjugations.
