Can reading skills help you solve a missing person's case?

Detective Badge What luck! It's just your first day on the job at Apex Private Investigators, and you’ve already been assigned your first case. Apex specializes in solving mysteries that involve the analysis of textual evidence. Fortunately for you, you've just learned how to effectively identify and analyze textual evidence. You’ll need a way with words and your best sleuthing skills to crack the case you've been assigned and show your new employer that she made a very good decision when she hired you.

Here are the facts of your first case:

Jenna Johansson is a 16 year old honor student at Essex Academy. This morning, Jenna adhered to her usual morning routine of waking up, getting dressed and eating breakfast with her family before making a mad dash for the school bus. Jenna’s mother, Margaret, waved to her as she hurried toward the bus stop. Jenna’s last words to her mother before turning the corner and slipping out of view were “Bye, Mom. I love you.”

Hours later, after checking her messages at work, Margaret learned that Jenna never made it to school. In fact, she never even boarded the school bus. When Margaret called the local police station, they told her it was too early to open a missing person’s case on someone Jenna's age. Unless her mother could provide solid evidence that Jenna may be at risk of harm, it would be hours before police would take any action to help find her.

Jenna’s mother contacted several of Jenna's friends, who claimed they had not heard from her that day and didn’t know where she was. Jenna's cell phone goes straight to voicemail when called. There has been no activity on her online social media accounts.

Besides her mother, Jenna lives with her dad, Hank, and her brother, Jacob. Her boyfriend, Steven Jassup, recently dumped her for a cheerleader. Jenna was sad about the breakup for a while, but she seemed to have gotten over it. Steven claims to know nothing about Jenna’s whereabouts.

In her apparent haste to leave the house, Jenna left her new diary open and unlocked on her desk. It has only one entry, which is dated the day before she disappeared. Jenna's mother reports that Jenna has kept a diary for years, but she is unable to find any of the previous ones her daughter filled, before starting the new one.

Your new boss has asked you to analyze the contents of Jenna’s diary, along with the facts of the case, and write a report. Besides summarizing what is known about Jenna's disappearance, you should draw some conclusions about whether Jenna is likely to have abandoned her daily routine willingly or if she was taken by force. Once your case report is written, you'll need to prepare a visual display of the evidence that supports your theory of what happened to Jenna.
