Today, in the center of Mexico City, stands the Plaza de las Tres Culturas or the Plaza of the Three Cultures. In the center of the Plaza are restored remains of an Aztec Temple. A church built by the Spanish conquistadors sits on one side of the square and on the other side lies glass office buildings—symbols of modern Mexico. The Plaza represents the indigenous people, the Spanish, and the mestizos whose histories combined to form the Mexico of today. Nearly all Mexicans speak Spanish as their official language, however native Mexicans often speak their indigenous languages at home. While the Mexican constitution allows for freedom of religion, most Mexicans are Roman Catholics. A small percentage of the population still holds most of the country’s wealth. Mexico is a country that is working to create more opportunities for its people.
